MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball had its three-game winning streak end on Saturday night with a 92-85 loss to Concordia-St. Paul inside the R/A Facility on Saturday night.
CSP, which improves to 7-2 overall, 2-1 NSIC, made 13 3-pointers and had five players reach double figures with Cade Meyer scoring a game-high 20 points on 9 of 11 from field.
Jakob Braaten paced the Mustangs (7-2, 2-1 NSIC) with 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field.
Caleb Schlaak came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points and pull down a career-high 15 rebounds to secure his first career double-double.
Aeron Stevens added 17 points for the Mustangs,
Steven Kramer chipped in with 13 points, while
Dunwa Omot finished with 10 points.
SMSU finished the game shooting 46 percent (31 of 67) from the field with four 3-pointers in 18 attempts. The Mustangs held a 23-9 advantage in points off turnovers and scored 50 points in the paint.
CSP shot 55 percent (36 of 65) from the field, the highest by percentage by an SMSU opponent this season. Marcus Skeete and Antwan Kimmons both scored 18 points to help the CSP charge with Kimmons adding a team-high eight rebounds.
SMSU, which never led in the game, trailed 42-38 with 4:14 remaining in the first half following two Stevens free throws, before CSP closed the half on an 11-8 run to build a 53-46 halftime advantage. CSP shot 63 percent in the opening 20 minutes with seven 3-pointers.
SMSU would start the second half strong and tied the game at 57 following a three-point play by Kramer at the 15:51 mark.
CSP answered with its own run to regain the advantage at 70-61 with 12 minutes left in the game. The Golden Bears would continue to hold the lead and eventually built an 81-71 lead with 7:51 remaining.
SMSU would make one final push, scoring nine straight points over the next three minutes, to cut the deficit to 81-80 with 4:51 left. CSP would answer in a big way with Kimmons and Ben Kopetzki hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to push the margin to 87-80.
Omot connected on two free throws with 1:18 remaining to make the score 89-85, but CSP sealed the win making three free throws in the final 46 seconds.
CSP won its second in Marshall and earned its third in the last four meetings inside the R/A Facility.
SMSU will hit the road next Friday, Dec. 13, taking on defending national champion, Minnesota State with game time slated for 7:30 p.m. SMSU defeated MSU in a non-conference game earlier this season in Marshall, 81-68.
