SMSU brings intensity in big win over CSP

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team shot strongly to take down Concordia-St. Paul 87-64 in NSIC men's basketball on Saturday evening inside the Gangelhoff Center.

SMSU moves to 14-10 overall and 11-7 in NSIC play. CSP now sits at 9-16 overall, 4-15 in the NSIC.

The Mustangs were led by Cliff Cofield with 23 points, a team-high five free throws, and four rebounds. Dunwa Omot knocked down a squad-best two 3-pointers to secure 10 points in the win. Jake Phipps and Mekhi Shaw chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively.

SMSU closed the game shooting 52 percent (34 of 65), including 7 of 18 from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears concluded the contest with 42 percent shooting with 14 makes from deep.

The Golden Bears were led by Ben Kopetzki, who scored 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting, while pulling down two rebounds and dishing a team-high four assists.

SMSU took control of the first half of play, scoring 24 of the first 31 points. The Mustangs held CSP to 3 of 12 shooting in the opening eight minutes while making 10 of their 18 shots. Following the second media timeout, CSP would go on a run of its own, using three different scorers to push the score to 29-20, SMSU. 

Mason Lund and Aeron Stevens drained back-to-back threes to recapture momentum for the Mustangs. CSP would then go on another 13-5 run backed by a few layups to push the score to 46-29 with 1:38 left in the half. Cliff Cofield hit a driving layup before CSP knocked down a deep-ball on the other end to close the half at a score of 46-32, SMSU.

SMSU opened the second half with five straight points coming from Phipps and Cofield layups. CSP drained a three in response but shortly after Mekhi Shaw made a crafty move to get into the lane and get a layup to go with 16:09 left in the half. 

CSP tried its best to keep the game close but was answered by every point they scored by SMSU. The Golden Bears knocked down three 3-pointers in less than two minutes to reduce the deficit to single digits with just under 12 minutes left. SMSU kicked it back into gear using a pair of free throws and a layup to push the score to 66-54 at the second media timeout.

After the media timeout, SMSU would continue to apply pressure, sustaining its lead with another 9-7 run for nearly three minutes of play. SMSU closed the game out scoring the Golden Bears 15-7.

SMSU continues its road stretch next weekend against St. Cloud State on Friday, Feb. 16, then travels to play Bemidji State on Saturday, Feb. 17.
