Mustangs come back from double-digit deficit to secure season sweep over CSP

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team came back from down 17 points to secure the season sweep over Concordia-St. Paul 76-75 in NSIC women's basketball on Saturday afternoon inside the Gangelhoff Center.

SMSU moves to 15-9 overall and 13-5 in NSIC play. CSP now sits at 17-7 overall, 13-6 in the NSIC.

The Mustangs were led by Bri Stoltzman with 27 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and five assists. Sam Wall knocked down a squad-best four 3-pointers to secure 18 points in the win. Madison Gehloff and Hannah Parsley chipped in 12 points apiece, while Gehloff went a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line and pulled down five rebounds. 

SMSU closed the game shooting 38 percent (22 of 58), including 8 of 22 from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears concluded the contest with 53 percent shooting with four makes from deep.

The Golden Bears were led by Lindey Becher, who scored 28 points on 11 of 19 shooting, while pulling down five rebounds and blocking two shots.

Bri Stoltzman got the scoring started with a right-handed layup with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter. The next two sets of points went the way of the Mustangs, as Gehloff knocked down a pair of free throws followed by a Stoltzman jumper with 6:13 left. The Golden Bears' Lauren Wilson finally put CSP on the board at 5:13 with a successfully converted three-point play. Following the media timeout, CSP would make six of its next seven shots in building a 19-8 run to push the score to 19-14 in favor of the Golden Bears after 10 minutes of play.

CSP kicked off the second quarter scoring with a layup from Lindsey Becher with just over eight minutes left in the half. SMSU would be held scoreless for the next eight minutes until Madison Gehloff got a jumper to go with 4:50 left in the half. SMSU would be held scoreless again for two minutes before Bri Stoltzman was fouled at 2:07, and drained both free throws to give SMSU momentum in the final minutes of the half. Sam Wall knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to push the score to 36-25 with just over a minute to go. CSP got a layup to go at 33 seconds and closed the half up 38-25.

The Golden Bears opened the second half on a 5-2 run before a Parsley three killed some momentum for CSP. SMSU countered the run with one of its own, scoring 11 of the next 16 points to push the score to 48-38 with just under six minutes to go in the third. The Mustangs cut the deficit to single digits off a Stoltzman and-one at 1:46 in the third quarter and held on through the remaining seconds to cap the quarter down by nine.

SMSU garnered momentum quickly in the final 10 minutes, using a Stoltzman three and Gehloff layup to fuel a 7-3 run to cut the lead to six points with eight minutes remaining. Leah Dengerud answered the run with a key 3-pointer to push the lead back to 65-56 at 7:02. After the media timeout, Sam Wall knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the lead to a one-possession game at 65-62, CSP. Wall again would hit a key 3-pointer to keep the game within one possession. The game would go back and forth down the stretch and finally end up in the Mustangs' hands with a 76-75 lead with just under a minute left.

SMSU continues its road stretch next weekend against St. Cloud State on Friday, Feb. 16, then travels to play Bemidji State on Saturday, Feb. 17.
