SMSU catches fire from deep, downs Minot State 78-61

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team got a key 78-61 home win over Minot State in NSIC women's college basketball on Friday evening.

SMSU moves to 17-10 overall and 15-6 in NSIC play. MISU drops to 9-21 overall, 6-15 in the conference.

Sam Wall scored a game-high 21 points with a school single-game record tying seven 3-pointers, while setting a program single-game record with 16 3-point field goal attempts. Wall is now just one 3-pointer shy of breaking her single-season record of 77 set last season.

Hannah Parsley tallied 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting with seven rebounds and five assists. Peyton Blandin and Bri Stoltzman went a combined 8 of 22 from the field in adding 24 points for the Mustangs.

Maya Aguilar led the Beavers with 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting. MISU was out-rebounded by the Mustangs 38-30.

SMSU got things started as Bri Stoltzman took it coast-to-coast for a layup scored at 8:41 in the first quarter. The next score for SMSU came at 6:33 when Sam Wall drained a corner three to give the Mustangs a 5-4 lead. The Mustangs tacked on five more points in the following minutes before sending the Beavers to the foul line on an and-one play. The layup would be the spark of a 7-3 run for MISU to close out the quarter down 13-11.

The first two minutes of the second quarter went scoreless as both teams struggled to make a shot. Minot State finally broke the ice at 8:04 with a layup to tie the game 13-13. SMSU went on a 7-2 run in the final three minutes to close the half up 30-26.

The Mustangs closed the half shooting 36 percent from the field (11 of 31) including four makes from beyond the arc.

SMSU opened the second half going 5 of 5 from the field in building an 11-2 run to jump out to a 41-30 lead with 7:43 left in the third quarter. The Beavers showed life in the next four minutes of play, answering every point scored by SMSU. Following the media timeout, Minot State converted an and-one play and scored a layup shortly after to cut the deficit to 53-43 with 1:28 left in the frame.

SMSU continued to apply pressure in the final leg, holding MISU to 1 of 4 shooting in the first three minutes of the quarter while knocking down three 3-pointers in building an 11-4 run. Sam Wall began unloading from three and propelled the Mustangs to victory over the Beavers.

SMSU continues play at home tomorrow against MSU Moorhead with tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Mustangs have their eyes set on a first-round bye in the NSIC Tournament beginning on Feb 28.
