Women’s basketball hosts Augustana for first round of the NSIC Tournament

THE LOOK AHEAD
• The No. 5 seed Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team (17-11, 15-7 NSIC), hosts No. 12 seed Augustana University (7-19, 6-16 NSIC) in the first round of the NSIC Tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 28, with start time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the R/A Facility. 
• This is the third consecutive season that the Mustangs will host an NSIC Tournament game.
• The winner will advance to play the No. 4 seed, Northern State, at 4:30 p.m., on Sunday inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
• SMSU defeated AU 76-66 earlier this season in Sioux Falls.

SMSU IN THE NSIC TOURNAMENT
• Since the NSIC Tournament started in 2000, SMSU is 11-18 all-time with one championship title in 2002.
• SMSU advanced to the semifinals for the fifth time last season, and played in the first three championship games (2000, 2001, 2002).
• The Mustangs are 6-1 at home, 0-11 on the road and 5-6 in neutral site tournament games.
• Last season, the Mustangs defeated Minnesota Crookston 83-66 in the first round at home. 
• SMSU played St. Cloud State in the quarterfinals inside the Sanford Pentagon, edging out the Huskies by a score of 76-68.
• In the semifinals, Minnesota State defeated SMSU 100-82, ending SMSU's deepest NSIC Tournament run since the 2002-03 season.

AUGUSTANA SERIES HISTORY
• SMSU and AU will meet for the 54th time with the Vikings leading 34-19 in a series that began in 1969-70.
• SMSU is leads 14-13 all-time in games played in Marshall, including winning the last three and five of the last six since the 2018-19 season. 
• SMSU defeated AU earlier season in Sioux Falls 76-66 and has beat AU in four of the last six meetings.
• SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 7-8 all-time versus AU.

SMSU HEAD COACH TOM WEBB
Tom Webb is in his eighth season as head coach at SMSU with a 94-113 record, including 72-92 in NSIC play. 
• Webb is 185-236 overall in his 16th season as head coach at the Division II level after compiling a record of 91-123 in eight seasons (2008-16) as head coach at Cameron University (Okla.). 
• In 2022-23, SMSU advanced to the NSIC semifinals for the fourth time in program history and first time since 2003. 
• The team finished with 19 victories a season ago, tying for fifth most in program history, and highest total since 2004-05. 
• SMSU also recorded a top three finish in the NSIC South last season, best in the division era, while earning a top four finish in the NSIC regular season standings for the first time since 2004-05.

MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
• In the final NSIC stats (league games only), SMSU led the NSIC in 3-point field-goal pct. (35.0), and free throw pct. (77.3), finished second in scoring offense (73.3), third in field-goal pct. (42.6), and fifth in scoring margin (6.4). 
• Stoltzman ranked second in the league in scoring (17.7), fourth in assists (3.5), seventh in field goal pct. (46.2), 11th in free throw pct. (75.2) and 12th in rebounding (6.4).
•  Wall led the NSIC in 3-point field goals per game (3.0) and 3-point field goal pct. (36.9). She is tied for seventh across Division II in 3-pointers made and is tied for 10th amongst active players in Division II in career 3-pointers made.
• SMSU earned a key 78-61 home win over Minot State last Friday evening.
Sam Wall scored a game-high 21 points with a school single-game record tying seven 3-pointers, while setting a program single-game record with 16 3-point field goal attempts. Hannah Parsley tallied 16 points on 6 of 8 shooting with seven rebounds and five assists. Peyton Blandin and Bri Stoltzman went a combined 8 of 22 from the field in adding 24 points for the Mustangs.
• SMSU closed the regular season with a nail-biter 70-66 loss to MSU Moorhead last Saturday afternoon inside the R/A Facility. 
Bri Stoltzman led the Mustangs with 22 points while filling the stat sheet with six rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Sam Wall and Peyton Blandin, the only other Mustangs to score in double figures, added 14 points apiece in the loss. Wall broke her own single-season 3-point record with four makes from beyond the arc.
• SMSU has shot 50 percent or higher seven times this season.
• SMSU dished out a season-high 22 assists in victories over Martin Luther and Minot State (Jan. 13). 
Sam Wall became the 24th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points on Jan. 12 and ranks second in team history with 243 3-pointers. 
• Stoltzman ranks fourth in team history in field goal pct. (50.5, 361 of 715) and has scored 986 points in 84 games. 
  
MUSTANGS BY THE NUMBERS
• For the season, SMSU has two players averaging double figures in scoring, and three averaging over eight points per game. Junior Bri Stoltzman leads the way at 18.0 ppg while leading the team in both rebounding at 6.5 per game and assists with 98. 
• Senior Sam Wall is averaging 13.3 ppg and shooting 85 percent from the foul line. She leads the team with 80 3-pointers, the single-season record for 3-pointers made.
• Senior Madison Gehloff is scoring 9.9 ppg and is second on the team in rebounding (5.3). 
• Junior Peyton Blandin ranks second on the team with 54 3-pointers and is averaging 8.8 ppg. Senior Hannah Parsley  is averaging 9.9 ppg, and has snatched a team-second 41 steals.
• SMSU is shooting 43 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range, 76 percent from the free throw line and is plus-1.7 in rebound margin. The Mustangs are averaging 74 points per game, while opponents are averaging 67 ppg.

SMSU IN THE NCAA STATS   
• In the latest Division II national statistics (Feb. 25), SMSU ranks third in 3-pointers per game (9.7), sixth in 3-point field goal attempts (27.4), 30th in scoring offense (74.1), 34th in free throw pct. (76.0) and 14th in turnovers per game (13.1). 
Bri Stoltzman ranks 25th in field goals made (175), 31st in scoring (18.0) and 39th in free throws made (111). 
Sam Wall ranks seventh in 3-point field goals made (80) and seventh in 3-point field goal attempts (218).

STONE COLD STOLTZMAN
Bri Stoltzman recorded a career-high 36 points on 13 of 23 shooting in a loss to Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 10. She recorded her second 30-point game of her career with 31 points on 9 of 18 shooting in the win over No. 19 Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 9.
• Stoltzman is leading the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and free throws made. 

WALL REWRITES THE RECORDS 
Sam Wall set the program record for 3-pointers made in a single-season this season with 80 makes from beyond the arc so far, breaking her previous single-season record of 77 set last season.
• Wall's seven 3-pointers made against Minot State on Feb. 23 ties the record for 3-pointers made in a game in school history. 
• Wall ranks second all-time in 3-pointers made in program history with 243 in 126 games. She is nine away from moving into first all-time and passing Jenna Borchers (2018-23).
• She also ranks fifth in free throw percentage at .820 (155 of 189) and sixth in 3-point field goal percentage at .380 (243 of 639).

PEYTON BLANDIN NOTES
• Has started every game and is averaging 8.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg, and is second on the team in 3-pointers with 54.
• Scored a career-high 17 points vs. Northwest Missouri State (11/10/23).

KENNADI BUCHHOLZ NOTES
• Has played in 18 games and is averaging 2.6 ppg and 1.6 rpg.
• Scored season-high eight points at Minnesota Crookston (1/20/24).
• Season-high nine rebounds vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24). 
• Recorded her first double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds last season vs. Crown College (11/15/22). 

BRYNN BUSSE NOTES
• Has played in 25 games adding 33 points, 25 rebounds, and 17 assists. 
• Scored seven points on three field goals vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).
• Dished season-high five assists vs. Winona State (2/3/24).

ZOIE CENTERS NOTES
• Has played in 17 games and scored a season-high three points vs. Sioux Falls (12/14/23). 
• Tallied seven points, nine rebounds, and five assists in 18 games last season.

MADISON GEHLOFF NOTES 
• Has started every game and is averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
• Scored season-high 18 points at Winona State (12/1/23) and Minnesota Crookston (1/20/24). 
• Last season, tied a career-high with 20 points against Northwest Missouri State (11/11/22).
• Recorded a career-high 13 rebounds and five assists against Sioux Falls (11/22/22).

KENZIE JONES NOTES 
• Played in 14 games with eight starts and is averaging 7.3 ppg and 2.6 rpg.
• Scored a career-high 14 points with four 3-pointers at Michigan Tech (11/16/23).

HANNAH PARSLEY NOTES 
• Has played in 27 games with 20 starts and is averaging 9.9 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Missed one game with an injury. 
• Scored season-high and tied career-high 19 points vs. UMary (1/26/24)
• Career-high five steals vs. Nebraska-Kearney (11/11/23). 
• Recorded a career-high 11 rebounds vs. MSU Moorhead (1/12/24).

BRI STOLTZMAN NOTES 
• Has started every game and is averaging 18.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, and has dished out a team-high 98 assists.
• Scored a career-high 36 points on 13 of 23 shooting and tied a career-high five assists vs. Northwest Missouri State (11/10/23).
• Scored 31 points with nine field goals vs. Minnesota Duluth (12/9/23). 
• Named All-NSIC second team in 2022-23. 

AUDREY SWANSON NOTES
• Has played in 22 games and is averaging 1.6 ppg 
• Scored career-high 16 points with four 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).

MADDIE THORFINNSON NOTES
• Has played in all 28 games and has scored 44 points, grabbed 35 rebounds, and eight blocks. 
• Scored season-high six points four times this season. 
• Scored career-high 10 points vs. Augustana (12/1/22) last season. 

CHRISTINA WAGNER NOTES 
• Has played in 16 games and has scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. 
• Scored four points and recorded five rebounds with two steals vs. Bethany (11/27/23).

ELIZABETH WAGNER NOTES 
• Has played in 27 games and is averaging 3.9 ppg and 4.1 rpg.
• Scored a career-high 13 points vs. Martin Luther (1/2/24).
• Pulled down career-high eight rebounds three times this season.

SAM WALL NOTES 
• Has started every game and is averaging 13.3 ppg and leads the team with 80 3-pointers.  
• Ranks second in team history with 243 3-pointers. 
• Season-high 24 points at MSU Moorhead (1/12/24).
• Scored a career-high 25 points on seven field goals and four 3-pointers last season at Minnesota State (12/17/22).
• Made a school single-season record 80 3-pointers this season.

WORKING OVERTIME 
• SMSU is 13-30 all-time in overtime games and have not played one this season. SMSU was 1-1 last season defeating MSU Moorhead 82-75 on Jan. 13, and suffering a loss to St. Cloud State 70-59 on Jan. 20. 
• SMSU is 4-4 all-time in double OT games.

HOME AND AWAY     
• SMSU is 10-5 at home this season after finishing 11-4 at home in 2022-23 and 10-3 in 2021-22.
• The Mustangs are 7-6 in road/neutral site games this season after recording a 3-9 mark in road/neutral site games in 2022-23.

SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC 
• The 2023-24 campaign marks the 45th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
• SMSU has an all-time record of 294-426 in conference games and have won four regular season championships (1979-80, 1980-81, 2000-01, 2001-02) and one NSIC Tournament championship (2002).

MUSTANG HISTORY
• SMSU is in its 55th season of women's basketball in 2023-24.
• SMSU has played 1,385 games compiling an all-time record of 668-717.
• SMSU has recorded 31 winning seasons, including the last five season (including this season). The 2019-20 squad that finished 16-12 was the program's first winning season since 2009-10.
