SMSU opens play Thursday in NWBA Tournament

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team opens play in National Wheelchair Intercollegiate Basketball Men's Tournament on Thursday taking on the University of Missouri inside the R/A Facility with tip-off slated for 12 p.m.

If SMSU, the No. 7 seed, wins its first round game, they would play on Thursday at 8 p.m. versus No. 2 seed Wisconsin-Whitewater inside the PE Gym.
   
The 11-team tournament opens on Thursday with seven games, while seven more games will take place on Friday. The fifth-place, third-place and national championship games will be held on Saturday, March 16. Games will be played inside both the R/A Facility and PE Gym.  

Tickets are $10 each day with students K-12 just $5, while kids 5-and-under are free. SMSU student, faculty and staff are FREE with valid SMSU ID.
 
The University of Arizona has earned the No. 1 seed and will play its first game Thursday at 4 p.m. inside the PE Gym versus the winner of No. 8 City University New York and No. 9 Edinboro (Pa.). The No. 2 seed, Wisconsin-Whitewater, will play Thursday night at 8 p.m. inside the PE Gym versus the winner of No. 7 SMSU and No. 10 University of Missouri.  
 
SMSU and Missouri meet on Thursday with game time set for 12 p.m. at the R/A Facility.  
 
The University of Alabama won the men's championship a season ago in Whitewater, Wis.  
 
SMSU, which finished fifth at last season's championship tournament, has won three national titles in program history in 1981, 1983 and 1986. 
 
SMSU last hosted the national championship tournament in 2018.
