SMSU winning streak ends to Walsh

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team had its four-game win streak snapped on Tuesday suffering a 7-2 loss to Walsh University (Ohio) at the Kino Sports Complex.

SMSU drops to 6-7 overall with the loss, while WU improves to 5-3.

SMSU jumped to an early lead with Chase McDaniel working a nine-pitch walk to open the bottom of the first and moments later scoring on an RBI triple by Owen Latendresse. Issac Nett followed with an RBI bunt single to score Latendresse and give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.

WU rallied in the third behind a two-run home run to tie the contest at 2-2. The Cavaliers would take the lead in the fourth behind a single, sac bunt and run-scoring double.

SMSU had a great chance to tie or take the lead back in the sixth loading the bases with two walks and a base hit, but two strikeouts and a fielder's choice ended the Mustang scoring threat.

WU added to the lead in the seventh, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs off relief pitcher Latendresse. The SMSU reliever recorded a strikeout and a ground out, but WU came through with a big two-run double to make the score 5-2.

The Cavaliers put the game away adding two more runs in the ninth. Noah Sample was dominate for WU in relief, tossing four shutout innings with seven strikeouts to earn the save.

Ansen Dulas (0-2) started on the mound for the Mustangs and completed a strong six innings with 12 strikeouts. He allowed three runs on six hits with one hit batter in suffering the loss.

SMSU collected eight hits in the game with Nash and Nett leading the way with two hits each.
