NCAA men's basketball tournament selection show set for Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS - The 2024 NCAA Division II men's basketball championship field will be revealed this Sunday during an NCAA.com selection show starting at 10 p.m. CDT. The top eight teams in each of the eight regions will earn a berth to the 64-team NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament.

Southwest Minnesota State, ranked No. 6 in this week's NCAA Central Region rankings, holds a 19-12 overall record, after losing in the semifinals of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament on Monday afternoon to NSIC regular season and tournament champion, Minnesota State.

SMSU will be looking to make its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and first since 2018. SMSU won region championships in both 2001 and 2009, while losing in the first round in 2012, the region championship in 2017 and the second round in 2018.

The NSIC, the Great American Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) make up the 41-team Central Region. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Central Region tournament from March 16-17, 19. The winners of the MIAA, GAC and NSIC postseason tournaments earn automatic bids with the remaining five spots awarded on an at-large basis.

The Division II men's basketball championship consists of a 64-team field with eight qualifiers from each region competing at a single regional site. Twenty-three teams will earn automatic qualification and the remaining 41 will receive at-large bids to the tournament. Once the eight regionals conclude, respective teams will advance to the Men's Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., from March 26-30.
