CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team dropped its road game against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Sunday.
Chase McDaniel entered the game with 209 career hits, just four hits away from Greg Laughlin's record of 213 hits.
McDaniel's first hit started the game, a single up the middle, but the first inning ended up scoreless for both teams. In the second inning, the Mustangs struck first with a two-run home run from
Brady Petron to left center.
The Golden Eagles got their offense going in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run and a two RBI single, to take a 4-2 lead.
SMSU rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning,
Chase McDaniel's second hit was a solo shot to start the inning and
Owen Latendresse and
Jaxon Haase followed suit with solo home runs of their own to put the Mustangs back up 5-4.
UMC wasn't done with their strong hitting though, as they scored seven in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth,
Jake Tauer got things started with a leadoff double, before being brought in by McDaniel's third hit of the day, an RBI single. McDaniel scored on a fielder's choice and
Isaac Nett scored on a sacrifice fly to bring the Mustangs within three.
Minnesota Crookston scored a couple more runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 16-8 heading into the top of the sixth inning.
McDaniel led off the inning for the Mustangs with his fourth hit of the day, second home run of the day and the 213
th hit of his career. The rest of the sixth and the seventh innings were scoreless.
McDaniel made Mustang history in the top of the eighth inning, with a single into left field, the 214
th hit of his career, more than any other player in SMSU baseball history. McDaniel later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth, but UMC scored a pair to bring the score to 18-10 heading into the ninth.
Keenan Wenzel hit a double to right field and was brought in by a Petron double to left field, but UMC beat SMSU 18-11.
The Mustangs will return home this week, as they host the Northern State Wolves on Wednesday for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:30. Before hosting the Winona State Warriors on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 and on Sunday for a game starting at noon.
