SMSU drops two-game series to No. 14 Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 14 Augustana Vikings won their 18th straight game by piling in 21 runs on 23 hits to claim a sweep over the SMSU baseball team, 11-5 in seven innings and 10-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Ronken Field.

SMSU drops to 23-17 on the year and 17-14 in conference play.

In game one, the Vikings belted five home runs, including four in the first two innings, in building an 8-0 advantage.

SMSU scored its first two runs in the third as a pitch hit Brady Petron before Chase McDaniel drilled a two-run home run to left-center field.

The home run was his 70th base hit of the season tying the program single-season record he tied last season with Colby Pack, who collected 70 during the 2005 season.

In the seventh inning, McDaniel stepped into the batter's box with two runners on base and blasted an RBI single through the left side. The single broke the SMSU baseball single-season record for hits with 71.

McDaniel would set the single-season record in the seventh with a two-out RBI single to plate Peyton Nash. Following a walk to Isaac Nett, Owen Latendresse drilled a two-run single to cut the deficit to 11-5.

Shay Endres (3-2) started for the Mustangs and lasted five innings, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Jerod Cyrus threw the final inning in relief, recording one strikeout.

The Mustangs tallied six hits in game one with Chase McDaniel leading the way going 3 for 4 at the plate.

Ansen Dulas started game one for the Mustangs and struck out his first faced batter before making an unfortunate early exit due to injury. Bennett Knapper (1-2) entered next for the Mustangs and was tabbed with the loss after allowing six runs on four hits and two walks, striking out four.

SMSU broke through first in game two in the top of the second inning. After battling to a 3-2 count, Max Kalenberg drove a ball deep over the left field fence for a home run to give SMSU its first lead of the day.

Augustana responded in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs. After the bases were loaded by two players getting hit with a pitch and one drawing a walk before Nick Banowetz doubled to right field to score two runners and put AU in the lead.

The next SMSU run came in the fourth inning when Max Kalenberg drew a walk before Keenan Wenzel singled to right field to put two runners on base. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Caleb Gardow singled up the middle to plate Kalenberg and tie the game.

The Vikings again countered, this time with a huge inning. AU scored seven runs on nine hits in the inning, including a three-run home run to right field.

AU plated another run in the eighth before Chase McDaniel plated the final Mustang run on a wild pitch.

Kolby Kiser, Kobe Lovell, and Cameron Jensen all appeared on the mound in game two.

The Mustangs return to the field on Saturday, April 27, playing their first two games of a three-game series versus UMary, with the first pitch of game one set for noon, in Bismarck, N.D.
