MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State baseball dropped the first game of a three-game set with Minnesota State on Friday, suffering a 22-13 loss at Legion Field.
 
SMSU, which scored in eight of nine innings, racked up 18 hits, but MSU was able to hold off each SMSU rally to earn its 18
th straight win in the series since the 2014 season. SMSU trailed 16-12 after eight innings, but MSU sealed the victory with a six-run top of the ninth.
 
MSU, ranked No. 10 in this week's NCAA Central Region rankings, improves to 33-15 overall, 28-9 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 25-21 overall, 19-19 NSIC.
 
Chase McDaniel, Isaac Net, 
Jaxon Haase and 
Peyton Nash all collected three hits for the Mustangs, while 
Caleb Gardow and 
Jake Tauer each had two hits with Gardow adding four RBIs.
 
MSU jumped to an early 3-0 advantage in the second inning before Haase drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the second to put SMSU on the board. MSU went scoreless in the third and SMSU responded with Gardrow launching a solo blast to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
 
MSU pushed the margin to 4-2 in the fourth, but SMSU rallied in the home half of the frame with Gardow drilling a two-out, two-run single to plate Kalenberg and Haase and tie the game at 4-4.
 
The Mavericks answered in a big way in the top of the fifth taking advantage of three walks and two Mustang errors to score six runs, four unearned, on just two hits to regain the advantage at 10-4.
 
SMSU scored a run in the fifth with 
Keenan Wenzel hitting a one-out double and later scoring on a sac fly by Haase to make the score 10-5.
 
Trailing 10-5 in the sixth, SMSU plated two more runs with McDaniel hitting an RBI single and Nett following with a ground-rule double that was just a few feet from going over the fence for a three-run home run.
 
Holding a 10-7 lead, MSU pushed across four runs in the seventh to build a 14-7 lead, but SMSU answered once again with a three run seventh. Nash smacked a two-run single, while Wenzel reached on a fielder's choice to plate another run and cut the MSU lead to 14-10 after seven innings.
 
Both teams scored two runs in the eighth with the Mustangs plating runs on a sac fly by Gardow and an RBI single by Nash.
 
Leading 16-12, MSU would seal the victory with a six-run ninth on six hits.  
 
Ryan Chmielewski (3-6) started for SMSU and suffered the loss, lasting 4 2/3 innings giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
 
The teams, with both playing in next week's NSIC tournament, conclude the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Legion Field starting at 1:30 p.m.
