SMSU soccer falls in final non-conference contest

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team scored its first goal of the season, but Fort Hays State (Kan.) netted three to down the Mustangs at Morstad Field on the campus of Augustana University on Sunday afternoon. 

The Mustangs fall to 0-4 while the Tigers secured their first win of the season to improve to 1-1-2. 

The Mustangs recorded five shots with four being on net. Haley Mason scored the lone goal for the Mustangs in the 25th minute of the first half. Supporting the Mustang offense was Malorie Maderak tallying three shots with two on goal. Selena Prolic also logged one shot on goal.  

In the loss, Stella Litzen faced seven shots while tallying four saves in the net for SMSU. 

Fort Hays State posted 15 shots with seven being on target. Brittney Arneson (16', 87') and Allison Worley (51'), the Tigers' goal scorers, each put two shots on net. Gracen Chaney logged two assists and Worley secured one as well.  

The Tigers came out swinging in the first half earning four corner kicks in the early parts of the game, which led to Chaney finding Arneson's head to score the first goal for FHSU.  

Nine minutes later, the Mustangs would net their first goal of the season, with Haley Mason placing the ball in the top left corner to tie the game going into halftime. 

Fort Hays State would bury its second goal from a corner kick in the first five minutes of the second half. The Tigers found the back of the net with three minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. 

SMSU returns home for its NSIC opener against Wayne State on Friday, Sept. 20 with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
