SMSU soccer suffers setback in NSIC opener

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team was unable to snap its losing streak after suffering a 4-1 loss to Wayne State.

The Mustangs fall to 0-5, 0-1 NSIC while the Wildcats improve to 2-2-1, 1-0 NSIC.

SMSU recorded four shots with three being on net. Selena Prolic scored the lone goal for the Mustangs off a penalty kick awarded in the 75th minute. Prolic logged two shots on net and Tessa Borwick also secured one shot on goal.

In the loss, Rachel Hicks faced nine shots on goal while recording five saves in net for SMSU.

Wayne State posted 14 shots with nine being on net. The Wildcats had four different goal scorers on the day with Paige Pemberton (38'), Alaina Sorensen ('47), Riann Daas (70'), and Alyssa Ferin ('81) all finding the back of the net.

The majority of the first half was even play from both sides until Wayne State found its first goal with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

The second half was all Wayne State offense after the Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 a minute into the second half.

The Mustangs struggled to create any offensive chances until late in the game when a Wildcat defender was called for a handball in the box which resulted in a penalty kick.

The Wildcats added another goal in the 81st minute off a free kick to close out the game.

SMSU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 27 hosting UMary with kickoff slated for 3 p.m.
