Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 17 Hornets net three to outlast Mustangs

MANKATO, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 17 Emporia State (Kan.) on Sunday at the Pitch on the campus of Minnesota State University.

SMSU drops to 0-2 while Emporia State improves to 1-1 on the season.

The Mustangs recorded eight shots in the game with five being on net. Haley Mason and Selena Prolic tallied three shots apiece, with each tallying two on goal. Brooke Wetterstrom also secured one shot on goal.

In her first collegiate appearance, Stella Litzen faced six shots on goal and recorded four saves.

The Hornets tallied 14 shots on the day with six being on target. Abby Bachman and Megan Jeremias, the Hornets' goal scorers, each put two shots on net.

The Mustangs had majority of the possession in the first half until the Hornets found the back of the net with time expiring to take the lead 1-0 going into halftime.

12 minutes into the second half ESU increased its lead to two after an unlucky deflection by the Mustangs resulted in an own goal.

The Hornets used the own goal as fuel for another offensive push which led to a corner kick. Bachman curved a perfectly placed ball just over the head of Litzen to bury the third goal and put the game out of reach.

SMSU is back in action on Friday, Sept. 13, with a home match against No. 2 Washburn (Kan.) with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
