MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team used a well-rounded offense to earn a 93-70 victory over the MSU Moorhead Dragons in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Friday evening inside the R/A Facility.
With the win, SMSU head coach,
Tom Webb earned his 200th career win at the NCAA DII level.
SMSU (13-2, 7-2 NSIC) finished the day shooting 36 of 72 (50 percent) from the field including 30 percent (10 of 33) from downtown and 85 percent (11 of 13) from the charity stripe.
MSUM, which drops to 6-9 on the year and 4-5 in conference play, closed the night shooting 35 percent (25 of 71) from the field including shooting 6 of 23 (26 percent) from beyond the arc.
Bri Stoltzman led the SMSU offense with a game-high 23 points on 64 percent shooting from the field, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
Peyton Blandin connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points.
Kenzie Jones recorded 14 points, and
Audrey Swanson recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
SMSU started the game with an 11-5 run until MSUM went on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to one point with 2:58 to play in the first quarter. The Mustangs would hold onto a four-point lead going into the second quarter.
The Mustangs opened the second quarter by sinking a pair of 3-pointers, four free throws, and a pair of layups to go on a 12-5 run to lead by 11 with 6:30 remaining. Both teams would trade off the next 18 points to end the second quarter, but the Dragons would go into halftime with a nine-point deficit.
MSU Moorhead began the second half with a pair of layups, but SMSU would counter by holding the Dragons scoreless for the next three minutes to build to a 52-38 lead. The Dragons continued to battle by going on a 10-4 run to cut the Mustangs lead to eight with three minutes left in the third quarter.
SMSU would respond with three 3-pointers to maintain its 15-point going into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs would finish the game going on a 26-18 run to close out the game 93-70.
SMSU will be back in action tomorrow hosting Minot State (4-12, 3-6 NSIC), with tip-off set for 3:30 p.m.
