TUCSON, Ariz. - The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team wrapped up its 2025 spring trip with a 4-3 comeback win in eight innings in a non-conference contest versus Minot State at the Kino Sports Complex.
The game was called after eight innings due to travel rules set prior to the game.
SMSU, 7-3 overall, rounds out play in Arizona with a 5-1 record.
The Mustangs went down in quick fashion to start the game before the Beavers got right to work to plate their first run of the game.
A lead-off groundout was followed by a single to right field before the third batter of the inning walked to put two runners on base with one out. The next Minot State batter singled to right field, and a bobbled ball would result in the first Beaver run crossing the plate.
MSU used a two-out rally in the bottom of the second inning to score its second and third runs. With two outs and two runners on base, Grant Gabbert doubled to left field to score runners from second and first and put the Beavers up 3-0.
SMSU finally broke through in the top of the third inning as
Levi Lampert started things off with a lead-off double to right field. In the following at-bat,
Henry Hammrich blasted a two-run shot over the left-center wall to cut the deficit to one run heading into the fourth inning.
The next Mustang run came in the fifth inning, this time with
Chuck Hackett hitting a lead-off double to put a runner in scoring position. Following a groundout,
Cory Bantam came through with a big single to right field to score Hackett and tie the game.
Jerod Cyrus held the Beavers to just one hit until the eighth inning, giving the SMSU bats time to catch up.
Eli Gibbs was hit by a pitch to start the sixth before moving to second off a
Brock Woitalla single. A double steal shifted both runners into scoring position and a wild pitch brought Gibbs home for the game-winning run.
Owen Latendresse, the SMSU starter, was chased off the mound by the Beavers after allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Cyrus (1-0) earned the win after holding MSU scoreless in the final 6 1/3 innings, limiting the Beavers to just two hits while grabbing a pair of strikeouts.
The Mustangs recorded seven hits in the win with
Cory Bantam going 2 for 4 at the plate and
Henry Hammrich recording a team-high two RBIs.
SMSU returns to NSIC play on Saturday, playing the first doubleheader of a four-game series versus St. Cloud State at the US Bank Stadium.
