TUCSON, Ariz. – The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team concluded its regular season schedule this past weekend finishing with a 2-3 record at the University of Arizona Tournament.
On Friday, SMSU lost to UT Arlington (72-59) and Arizona (88-64) before defeating Eastern Washington (72-41). On Saturday, SMSU opened with a 67-31 victory over EWU, before suffering an 82-74 loss to Arizona.
SMSU, 13-8 overall, will now turn its focus to the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on March 27-29 hosted by the University of Illinois. The tournament seeds will be announced later this week.
In the first game of the weekend versus UTA,
Fermin Wingerter led the Mustangs with 19 points on 9 of 24 shooting, while
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes added a double-double with 17 points and 10 assists.
Joshua Brown connected on two 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
In the loss to UA, Wingerter paced the squad with a team-high 21 points on 10 of 24 shooting. Fuentes Cervantes grabbed 10 rebound and added 17 points.
Landon Wherry had a strong game making 6 of 7 shots to finish with 12 points.
In the Friday win over EWU, Wherry poured in 25 points and collected 15 rebounds.
Alex Wells made 7 of 9 shots to finish with 14 points while Brown added 12.
In SMSU's win over EWU on Saturday, the Mustangs had five players score in double figures. Wherry closed with 16 points with Brown adding 14 and Wells chipping in with 12.
In the weekend finale versus Arizona, Fuentes Cervantes scored 40 points with 17 field goals made, which included four 3-pointers. Brown added 18 points with Wingerter scoring 12 points with a team-high five assists.
