MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team will have its first home games of the season this Friday and Saturday hosting a two-day, five-team tournament inside the PE Gym.
SMSU, 9-2 on the season, will play a total of five games during the two days with a pair on Friday and three on Saturday.
SMSU opens play on Friday at 3.m. versus the University of Illinois. This will be the second meeting this season after SMSU earned a 60-49 victory on Nov. 23 in Whitewater, Wis. At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, SMSU will close the night with a match-up versus defending national champion, UW-Whitewater.
On Saturday, SMSU opens with a 9 a.m. game versus Illinois before facing UW-Whitewater in a rematch at 12:30 p.m. The Mustangs close the tournament with a 2:15 p.m. game versus the Rolling Timberwolves.
A total of seven games will be played over the two days inside the PE Gym.
SMSU last played a month ago winning three of four games at the University of Missouri Tournament. The Mustangs defeated the University of Missouri twice and Wisconsin-Whitewater, while suffering a close loss to Auburn.
Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes is averaging a team-high 25 points per game, while shooting 51 percent from the field with a team-high 32 3-pointers. Josh Brown ranks second on the team with 80 field goals and is scoring 15.7 ppg, while
Fermin Wingerter is averaging 15.3 ppg in eight games.
Following this weekend, SMSU will conclude the regular season with five games at the University of Arizona Tournament on March 14-15. SMSU will close the season on March 27-29 at the national tournament hosted by the University of Illinois.
