MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team capped off a six-win week by sweeping the Northern State Wolves in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader played at Mustang Field on Sunday.
The Mustangs earned a 3-2 come-from-behind win in game one before securing the sweep with an 11-5 victory in game two.
SMSU improved to 28-20 on the season and 10-12 in NSIC play, while NSU drops to 10-31 overall and 4-16 in conference play.
The Wolves worked quickly to strike early. A pair of runners made their way into scoring position before a bases-clearing double by Avarie Eagle gave NSU a 2-0 advantage after the first inning.
Grace Anderson singled up the middle to start the bottom of the second before advancing to second on a sac bunt by
Paris Van Dyke. A second base hit moved Anderson to third before she crossed the plate on a groundout. A strikeout ended the inning and put the threat to a stop.
The subsequent three frames saw each team go hitless until SMSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Emma Humpal singled to start the inning before moving to third on a sac bunt and fly out and scoring on an infield single.
The Mustangs clutched up in the bottom of the sixth to pull ahead. Humpal and Anderson each got on base to begin the frame before Van Dyke again laid down a bunt to shift the runners. This time it was
Karlie Miller who delivered, singling up the middle to plate Humpal and give SMSU the lead.
NSU threatened by getting runners on the corners in the seventh before a strikeout and fly out in back-to-back at-bats ended the game.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and never looked back in cruising to the 11-5 win in game two.

A walk and two base hits loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second. Miller would beat a throw home to score the third SMSU run before
Abby Russell added to the lead with a two-out, two-RBI single through the left side.
