MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team (1-0) started their regular season play on Sunday with a 6-0 win over the Dakota State Trojans (0-5-1) at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
This is the first time since Oct. 16, 2022, against Minnesota-Crookston that the Mustangs have scored six goals in a match.
In a game where the Mustangs dominated with 60% possession and 15 shots on goal, SMSU was led by freshman forward
Virginia Pruitt, and senior forward
Brooke Wetterstrom, both scoring twice.
Pruitt scored both her goals in the first half, the first assisted by sophomore defender
Mercy Godfrey, and the second by junior defender
Sophia Sonnek.
Mercy Godfrey got on the scoring sheet in the first half as well, assisted by junior forward
Breanna Clemens, and the fourth goal in the first half was scored by senior forward
Kylie Brazill.
Wetterstrom scored her first goal, and the team's fifth, early in the second half. Just three minutes later, Wetterstrom scored her second, assisted by Pruitt.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kennady Krebs kept a clean sheet, with the Mustangs not allowing a shot on goal in the 90 minutes of play.
Next week, the Mustangs play another home match against Upper Iowa on Friday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m. SMSU then travels south to play Fort Hays State (Kan.) on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 12 p.m.
