Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mustangs' win streak comes to an end with overtime setback to Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Friday suffering a 74-71 overtime loss to the University of Jamestown in NSIC basketball.

The Jimmies' Anthony Walters drilled a 3-pointer with five seconds left in overtime for the game-winning shot. UJ improves to 10-11 overall, 8-7 NSIC, and is now 3-1 in overtime games this season. The Jimmies, now tied atop the NSIC North Division standings, suffered their lone overtime loss to the Mustangs in a non-conference game back in November in St. Paul, Minn.

SMSU, which drops to 14-6 overall, 12-3 NSIC, trailed for much of the game but rallied late in regulation with Mekhi Shaw tying the game with a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining.

The Mustangs scored the first two points of overtime on free throws by Mason Lund, but finished the five-minute frame 0 for 6 shooting from the field. SMSU had three possessions in overtime with the game tied, but missed two shots and committed a turnover with 32 seconds remaining setting up the final possession for the Jimmies.

Aeron Stevens led the Mustangs with 23 points on 8 of 13 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists. Landon Pokorski had a big night for the Mustangs scoring a career-high 20 points on 8 of 12 from the field with four 3-pointers. Shaw closed the evening with 13 points off the bench.

SMSU shot 46 percent (25 of 54) from the field while making 11 of 23 from 3-point range. The Mustangs, which committed a combined 14 turnovers in two victories last weekend, closed the game with 16 turnovers leading to 17 points for the Jimmies.

Owen Hektner led UJ with 17 points with three 3-pointers and four steals. The Jimmies made 13 3-pointers in the game and finished shooting 49 percent (29 of 59) from the field.

SMSU opened strong building a 14-7 lead just over six minutes into the game. UJ however would counter with a 25-6 run to build a 32-20 advantage with five minutes left in the half. UJ would take its largest lead of the game at 39-24 with 1:30 remaining but a free throw by Stevens and a 3-pointer by Shaw cut the deficit to 39-28 at the break.

Pokorski started the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to pull SMSU within 39-34. A Shaw field goal would later cut UJ's lead to 40-36 at the 16:52 mark, but the Jimmies answered with another big run to push the margin to 56-43 with just under nine minutes left in regulation.

SMSU would not go away and cut the lead to 63-61 following a Micah Schlaak field goal with 2:30 on the clock. After Hektner hit a jumper, the Mustangs committed a turnover and missed two free throws on their next two possessions, before Hektner hit a jumper just inside the 3-point line to give UJ a 67-61 lead with 50 seconds left.

SMSU came back with Shaw hitting a 3-pointer and Pokorski scoring on a layup bring the Mustangs to within 67-66 with 16 seconds remaining in regulation. Following two free throws by Hektner, Shaw came through with the game-tying 3-pointer just before the regulation buzzer.

SMSU will look to rebound on Saturday with a 6 p.m. match-up at Northern State.
