MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team (1-7-2, 1-5-1 NSIC) dropped a 2-0 decision to Northern State on Friday afternoon at Mattke Field.
Northern State opened the scoring in the seventh minute as Lauren Youngquist found the back of the net off an assist from Kylie Albert right after the 8th minute mark. Youngquist struck again just over 10 minutes later, scoring her second goal of the afternoon, and her third of the season, in the 18th minute. to give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage.
SMSU goalkeeper Madelyn Cory kept the Mustangs within reach throughout the match, recording five saves, including two in the opening half and three after halftime. Northern State goalkeeper Audrey Burns made two saves before Ava Nelson entered in the second half and recorded two saves to preserve the shutout.
The Mustangs finished with five shots, including four on goal. Sophia Bakri, Abigail Schmidt, Sophia Wilson and Janae Kayser each recorded a shot on target, while Illjana Arbaugh added a shot late in the second half.
Northern State finished with 10 shots and seven shots on goal while holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Wolves also recorded seven shots in the first half before SMSU generated all five of its shots following halftime.
SMSU returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 4, hosting Jamestown on Senior Day at Mattke Field with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
