SMSU's Allison Milbrandt honored as recipient of Kay Yow Servant Leader Award

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University senior women's basketball player Allison Milbrandt has been selected as a Kay Yow Servant Leader Award winner ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund announced the award on Monday, which recognizes student-athletes who exemplify the values of leadership, selflessness and service, embodying the Hall of Fame basketball coach Kay Yow.

Milbrandt, along with other award winners around the country, will receive a jersey patch to visibly recognize their accomplishments throughout the season.

A native of Stewart, Minn., Milbrandt is beginning her fourth season as a member of the SMSU women's basketball program.

The Kay Yow Servant Leader Award honors Coach Yow's legacy and the young people who carry the fight forward, inspiring others through their actions and leadership. It is presented annually to student-athletes who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to making a positive impact in their communities – people with a servant's spirit and a commitment to selfless leadership both on and off the court or athletic field.

"Allison has always been someone who leads through action," said Tom Webb, SMSU head women's basketball coach. "Whether she is serving in the community, supporting her teammates, or representing our university, she does it with genuine care for others. We are incredibly proud to see her recognized with this special honor."

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was founded in honor of former North Carolina State head coach Kay Yow, who had a 22-year battle with breast cancer before passing away in 2009. She helped set up the fund in 2007 to support advanced research, extend the quality of life for those battling cancer, serve the underserved and unite people.

Yow was widely admired not only for her success on the court but also for her compassion, integrity, and dedication to helping others. She hoped to inspire people to make a difference in the fight against all cancers affecting women – a fight that impacts everyone. You counted on the sports community of coaches, players, officials, and fans to propel the cause.
