SMSU baseball pushes win streak to four straight with run-rule victory

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team extended its winning streak to four in a row with a 14-2 run-rule victory in seven innings over Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Friday afternoon at the Kino Sports Complex.
 
Connor Davis finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Mustangs with teammate Tanner Rezny collecting two hits and three RBIs. Levi Lampert and Brock Woitalla both finished the game with two hits while Lampert added a pair of RBIs. SMSU finished the game with 11 hits.
 
SMSU improves to 8-5 overall, while DWU falls to 9-4 with its second straight loss to the Mustangs.
 
Cody Wichmann (2-0) tossed a strong six innings to earn the victory on the mound allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
 
SMSU opened the scoring in the top of the first with Lampert starting the game with a walk before later scoring on ground out by Evan Behn.
 
The Mustangs put together a big second inning plating five runs on hits to push the margin to 6-0. Lampert started the scoring with an RBI single to score Henry Hammrich before Jared Cortez singled through the left side to score Woitalla and make the score 3-0. With two outs, Davis came through with a two-run double to left-center field and was followed by a run-scoring base hit by Rezny.
 
Wichmann held the Tigers scoreless through five innings before the Mustangs added to the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally. Tyler Froland was hit by a pitch with two outs before moving to second on a single by Davis. Rezny came through with an RBI single to plate Froland before Davis later scored on a throwing error by the DWU catcher.
 
DWU got on the board with a two-run homer in the sixth, but SMSU responded in big way in the seventh using four hit by pitches, a walk and one big extra-base hit to help end the game via run-rule. Lampert and Cortez both were hit by pitches with the bases loaded to make the score 10-2 before Froland smashed a three-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 13-2. Rezny would cap the scoring with a sac fly to score Froland.
 
Carson Bougher sealed the victory tossing a scoreless seventh with a strikeout and coaxing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
 
SMSU and DWSU will meet up again for a third straight day on Saturday with a single game starting at 11 a.m. CST.
