TAMPA, Fla. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (12-8) suffered two losses Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against the University of Tampa Spartans (13-5), dropping game one 5-0 and game two 3-1.
GAME ONE
Ramsey Hopp (3-6) started the game for SMSU pitching five innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on 11 hits, striking out one Spartan batter. Jordan Bussey relieved Hopp after the fifth, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in the sixth.
Hopp, Riley Kramolisch, and Aliza Acker were the only Mustangs with hits in the game, as Tampa pitcher Gwen McGinnis (8-2) secured the victory, allowing just three hits with one strikeout.
UT got on the board in the fourth inning, courtesy of a pair of RBIs from Hannah Yetter and Aubrey Zechmann.
The Spartans would add three more runs in the following inning, with Cam Feast, Makiah Brumbelow-Neal, and Karlee Salisbury doing the damage for UT.
GAME TWO
Jordyn Marsh (9-1) suffered her first defeat of the season, pitching six innings allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits, fanning four batters in the process.
SMSU again only had three hits in the contest, with Marsh and Riley Kramolisch carrying the load for the Mustangs. Kramolisch had two hits in the game.
Marsh gave SMSU the lead in the second inning, scoring the only run of the game for the Mustangs, on a wild pitch.
Tampa would score all three of their runs in the fourth inning, with RBIs from Cam Feast, Karlee Salisbury, and Abbey Johns. Tampa's Kennah Kriedler had the only other hit for UT.
The Spartans relied on pitcher Koda Travers (2-1) in game two, pitching all seven innings while allowing the one run on three hits, striking out two Mustangs.
SMSU is in action on Monday at THE Spring Games against Point Park (Pa.) and Lynn. Game one is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. CDT / 11:15 EDT.
