Mustang pitchers lead way to third sweep in Florida trip

BARTOW, Fla. - Dominant pitching was on display Monday afternoon by Ramsey Hopp and Jordyn Marsh of Southwest Minnesota State (14-8), each earning a shutout victory over Point Park (Pa.) and Lynn respectively.

GAME ONE (Point Park)

SMSU defeated the Point Park Pioneers (1-5) 11-1 in six innings.

Ramsey Hopp (4-6) pitched lights out for the Mustangs, allowing just three hits on the afternoon, with three strikeouts. Jordan Bussey entered the contest in the fifth inning, facing two batters, and was credited with an earned run.

Eight different Mustang batters had hits in the game for a total of 11 hits. Grace Anderson, Paris Van Dyke, and Kennah Bretschneider each had two hits and two or more RBIs in the game. Anderson was also one of three players with two walks in the game along with Riley Kramolisch and Carley Stych. SMSU was walked 11 times by Point Park, the most this season.

Anderson began the game in style for the Mustangs, hitting her first home run of the season over the center field fence.

Van Dyke added to the early lead with a two-out, two-RBI double, giving SMSU a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Aliza Acker extended the lead in the fourth inning with a deep sac-fly to center field, allowing Stych to score.

The Mustangs below the doors wide open in the fifth inning. Lexi Ingalls drilled a double to left center field, which brought home Van Dyke. Kramolisch added a single up the middle to bring home Bretschneider, before Anderson added a blooper to right field which dropped for a base hit, scoring two more.

The Pioneers kept the game going in the fifth, bringing home a run on a sac-fly, and avoiding a fifth inning run rule.

SMSU however had other ideas in the sixth inning, with Bretschneider putting a base hit into left center field, which scored two runs, making the lead 10-1. Ava Rud walked with the bases loaded, which would be the final run scored in the game.

Emma Henry (0-2) started the game for Point Park pitching five innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on ten hits with five walks, striking out one Mustang batter. Mia Arndt led Point Park with two hits and the lone RBI in the contest.

GAME TWO (Lynn)

Jordyn Marsh (10-1) pitched all seven innings for SMSU, allowing just four hits all day while striking out six Lynn batters.

The Mustangs had six hits in the game from five different batters. Riley Kramolisch led the team with two hits, while Marsh, Grace Anderson, Emma Humpa, and Paris Van Dyke each provided one hit.

SMSU had chances early to take a lead, squandering opportunities in the first and second inning with a runner on second base.

Marsh saved the best for last, striking out two batters in the top of the seventh, and starting the bottom half of the inning with a base hit to left field. Kennah Bretschneider pinch-ran for Marsh, and after a fielding error by Lynn's pitcher Savannah Ellis, found herself at third base with one out.

Kaylee Hafermann hit a ground ball to third base and a well-timed run by Bretschneider brought the winning run home.

Lynn's Ellis pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run (unearned) and six hits with one strikeout. The Fighting Knights were led offensively by Kyleigh Hope and Ellis with two hits each.

SMSU faces Florida Southern in a doubleheader Tuesday evening with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 4 p.m. CDT / 5 EDT.
