MARSHALL, Minn. – Behind a dominant performance on the mound by
Cody Wichmann, the Southwest Minnesota State baseball team (18-23, 8-21 NSIC) defeated the Jamestown Jimmies (12-27, 7-19 NSIC) Monday afternoon 10-0 in seven innings, winning the series 2-1.
Wichmann (3-2) pitched all seven scoreless innings for the Mustangs allowing just three hits and three walks, while striking out a career-high nine batters.
Connor Davis led the way at the plate for SMSU with two hits, adding four RBIs to his team-leading 45 on the season. Six other Mustang batters had hits, and
Levi Lampert added two RBIs
Davis began the scoring in the first inning with a single to center field, allowing Lampert to score one of his two runs in the game.
In the third inning, Davis cleared the bases with a double to right center, and
Carter Lang reached on a Jamestown error, leaving the score at 5-0.
Lampert hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth inning while
Jared Cortez brought home the seventh run with a bunt to the right side of the infield.
Nathan Wheeler singled up the middle to allow
Henry Hammrich to score the ninth run in the seventh inning, while Lampert sent home the 10
th run of the game with a single to center field.
Karver Partlow (0-3) pitched the first three innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on three hits while striking out one batter. Three other Jamestown pitchers combined for the remaining 3 1/3 innings with two earned runs on five hits and three strikeouts. Three separate Jimmie batters reached first on hits.
SMSU travels to Wayne, Neb., on Wednesday to face the Wayne State Wildcats in a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
