DULUTH, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State sophomore right-handed pitcher
Jameson Quinn tossed the ninth no-hitter in team history to lead the Mustangs to a split in a pair of low-scoring games versus Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at Bulldog Park.
SMSU won the opener 1-0, behind a fifth inning solo home run from
Josh Berreth, while in game two the Mustangs were limited to four hits in suffering a 4-0 loss.
The two clubs will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Wade Stadium.
SMSU is 20-25 overall, 10-23 NSIC, while UMD is now 15-29 overall, 14-18 NSIC.
Quinn (4-4), who tossed a one-hitter in his previous start last Sunday versus Jamestown, was outstanding in tossing the first no-hitter in program history since the 2014 season. He walked one batter while striking out six in facing two batters over the minimum.
UMD starting pitcher Henry Wilkinson was nearly unhittable as well, allowing just one SMSU batter to reach in the game, but it was a home run by Berreth leading off the fifth inning. Wilkinson finished the game with eight strikeouts.
In game two, UMD scored an unearned run in the third before plating two runs (one unearned) in the fifth to build a 3-0 advantage. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth for the final margin.
Cody Wichmann (3-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in 5 2/3 innings recording seven strikeouts and walking two.
Dylan Webb allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Levi Lampert,
Connor Davis,
Brock Woitalla and
Lane Moline each had a hit in game two.
