BISMARCK, N.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (31-25, 17-13 NSIC) surpassed the 30-win total for the first time in a season since 2009 on Sunday afternoon, defeating the UMary Marauders (13-39, 3-27 NSIC) in a doubleheader 9-2 in game one and 17-6 in game two. The Mustangs 17 runs and 19 hits in game two are both a season-high.
Senior Riley Kramolisch made history of her own becoming SMSU's all-time career hits leader in the second game of the Mustangs doubleheader, surpassing Bailey Johnson with 226 hits.
GAME ONE
Jordyn Marsh (21-8) pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. Marsh struck out 10 batters which tied her second highest strikeout mark in a game this season.
Marsh and Emma Humpal led SMSU with three hits and two RBIs each, while Aliza Acker also had two RBIs.
UMary began the scoring in the bottom of the second off a solo home run from Madison Shamanski.
Marsh put the Mustangs on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly which sent Paris Van Dyke home from third base.
Humpal and Marsh delivered back-to-back home runs to give SMSU a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning. This was the first time since 2017 that the Mustangs hit back-to-back home runs.
The Mustangs put the game to bed in the seventh inning, scoring six runs on seven hits, including a two-RBI single from Acker and RBI base hits from Humpal, Lexi Ingalls, and Kennah Bretschneider.
The Marauders scored a consolation run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Francesca Villaneda.
Arria Johnson (8-16) pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Marauders, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Camryn Fuessel pitched the remaining 1 2/3 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits. Shamanski led UMary with two hits and scored both runs for the Marauders.
GAME TWO
Ramsey Hopp (10-16) pitched six innings allowing six earned runs on 12 hits with one strikeout. Jordyn Marsh pitched in relief in the seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Six Mustang batters had two or more hits in the game, while four of those had three hits. Emma Humpal had six RBIs, the most in a game since 2011 when Christine Borowiak had seven against Northern State.
Humpal kicked things off in the first inning with a three-run home run, her sixth home run of the season.
Kramolisch earned career hit number 226 in the second inning with a bunt single down the third base line.
The Mustangs would score five runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a bases loaded walk, and a Kennah Bretschneider single which turned into a bases clearing error.
UMary would respond by scoring a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings, making the score 8-4 after four.
Lexi Ingalls would add to the SMSU lead in the fifth inning after stealing third base and scoring on a UMary error, before the Marauders would strike again in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RBI double from Olivia Gomez.
The Mustangs would slam the door on the Marauders in the top of the seventh by scoring eight runs on seven hits, featuring two RBIs from Humpal and Kramolisch.
Jayleen Rojas (4-9) started for UMary pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. Arria Johnson did the most work out of the bullpen pitching 3 2/3 innings allowing nine runs (six earned) on nine hits with one strikeout.
Ivee Jonson and Camryn Fuessel combined for two innings on the mound allowing one unearned run between the two. Six different UMary batters had two hits in the contest with Janelle Bergman and Gomez each earning two RBIs.
SMSU will compete in the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D., next week with a date and time to be determined at a later date.
