MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's soccer team (0-3-1, 0-1-0 NSIC) dropped a 2-1 decision to Minnesota Duluth (2-1-1, 1-0-0 NSIC) on Friday afternoon at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center.
Minnesota Duluth finished the match with a 24-2 advantage in shots and held a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also had a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.
SMSU opened the scoring late in the first half as senior defender Abigail Schmidt found the back of the net in the 38th minute. Schmidt took a free kick from midfield that took one boune and sailed over the head of UMD goalkeeper Jordan Rosenfeld giving the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime. The goal marked Schmidt's first of her SMSU career.
Minnesota Duluth answered in the second half, with Lauren McGough scoring her third goal of the early season in the 55th minute off an assist from Nora Helvig to even the match at 1-1.
The Bulldogs completed the comeback in the 81st minute when Juliana Zerna scored her first goal of the season directly from a corner kick to give UMD a 2-1 lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Madelyn Cory played all 90 minutes in net for SMSU, recording eight saves.
The Mustangs return to action on Sunday when they face Bemidji State at Mattke Field with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
