What sports do you cheer for?
SMSU Cheerleaders cheer at all home football and men’s and women’s basketball games.

Can I cheer for only one sport?
SMSU Cheerleading is a year-long commitment. The season begins with camp in August and runs until tryouts in April. Skills learned during fall football season are continually developed throughout basketball season.

When are games?
Football games are usually Saturday evenings. Basketball games are usually Friday and Saturday evenings. Occasionally games may be held on other days.

Do you cheer at away games?
SMSU Cheerleaders travel to post-season tournament games only. They do not cheer at regular season away games.

When are practices?
Practices are generally held in the mornings and Sunday evenings so as not to conflict with class times.

When are tryouts?
Tryouts are held each spring in April and again in early September.

What do tryouts entail?
Tryouts consist of a mandatory clinic where you will learn the Fight Song, cheers, a short dance, jumps and basic stunting. Please visit the tryout page for more information.

Is tumbling required?
Tumbling experience is not required, but it is highly encouraged!

Is cheerleading experience required?
Cheer experience is not required but nearly all members have cheer, dance or gymnastics experience.

Do you stunt?
SMSU is a stunting squad, in accordance with all safety guidelines set forth by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA).

Do you compete?
SMSU does not compete at this time.

Do you attend cheerleading camp?
SMSU attends camp in early August before school starts.

What does it cost to cheer?
SMSU provides all uniforms, poms, ribbons, travel costs, game-day meals and camp registration and accommodations. Cheerleaders are responsible for purchasing their own warm-ups, bags, shoes, briefs and practice gear.

Do you offer scholarships?
At this time SMSU is not able to offer cheerleading scholarships.

Anything else?
SMSU Cheerleading hosts fundraising events throughout the year. Funds raised help to pay for uniforms, travel costs, camp and additional cheer gear.
