SMSU Cheerleading Facts

Is Cheerleading part of the Athletic Department?
Cheerleading at SMSU falls under the supervision of the athletic department. Though it is not an NCAA Varsity sport, SMSU Cheerleaders must comply with eligibility requirements.

What sports do you cheer for?
SMSU Cheerleaders cheer at all home football and men’s and women’s basketball games.

Can I cheer for only one sport?
SMSU Cheerleading is a year-long commitment. The season begins in August and runs until tryouts in April. Skills learned during football season are continually developed throughout basketball season.

When are games?
Football games are usually Saturday evenings. Basketball games are usually Friday and Saturday evenings. Occasionally games may be held on other days.

Do you cheer at away games?
SMSU Cheerleaders travel to post-season tournament games only. They do not cheer at regular season away games.

When are practices?
Practices are generally held in the mornings and as needed leading up to games.

When are tryouts?
Tryouts are held each spring in April and potentially in early September.

Is tumbling required?
Tumbling experience is not required, but it is highly encouraged!

Is cheerleading experience required?
Cheer experience is not required but nearly all members have cheer, dance or gymnastics experience.

Do you stunt?
SMSU is a stunting squad, in accordance with all safety guidelines set forth by the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA).

Do you compete?
SMSU does not compete at this time.

What does it cost to cheer?
SMSU provides all uniforms, poms, and ribbons. Cheerleaders are responsible for shoes, practice attire, and warmups.

Do you offer scholarships?
At this time SMSU is not able to offer cheerleading scholarships.
