During his first season at SMSU in 2024, SMSU earned a sixth-place finish in the NSIC and secured the program’s second straight appearance in the NSIC tournament. He has also been assistant coach with Pleasant Valley High School (2019-24), which made four appearances in the Class 4A state tournament with one state title in 2021.

Lawson played baseball at Cornell University (Iowa) baseball team and was a member of the Midwest Conference championship and NCAA playoff team in 2019.
