Abby Oakland

Abby Oakland is in her third season as assistant women’s basketball coach at SMSU in 2015-16. She was hired on June 20, 2013.

Oakland came to SMSU after spending the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Bemidji State University, helping lead the Beavers to an 11-16 record. 

Prior to joining BSU, Oakland spent one season (2011-12) as the assistant women’s basketball coach and head junior varsity coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa. She began her coaching career in 2009, spending two seasons (2009-11) as a graduate assistant at Northern State University.

Oakland is no stranger to SMSU, having spent four seasons (2005-09) competing on both the women’s basketball and women’s golf teams, earning Academic All-NSIC honors three times in both sports. On the court, Oakland played in 114 games - making 103 starts - scoring 689 points and recording 330 assists, which ranks seventh in school history. She finished her career shooting a school record 85.6 percent (125 of 146) from the free throw line, while her 96 career 3-pointers ranks tied for ninth in program history. 

On the golf course, Oakland helped lead SMSU to two NCAA tournament appearances, while earning All-NSIC honors three times. She finished her career with an 82.6 stroke average ranking eighth in program history.

Oakland is a 2009 graduate of SMSU in sports management, while earning her master’s degree from Northern State in 2011 with a degree in education.
