Leidall Scores 1,000th Career Point in Rout of Mayville State

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN. -
Sara Leidall scored her 1,000th career point on Tuesday as Southwest Minnesota State beat Mayville State (N.D.) 107-45 in a non-conference game in Marshall.  The win improves SMSU to 4-1 this season, while MSU drops to 2-6.  For the Mustangs, it's their best start since the 2004-05 season when they started 7-0.  It's also the first time in school histroy that Southwest has scored over 100 points in consecutive games after defeating Chadron State (Neb.) 111-75 on Saturday.

While Leidall stole the headlines with her 1,000th point and a solid line of 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, it was teammate Heidi Kimmes who came up big with a game-high 18 points, just one point shy of a career-high, on 9-of-10 shooting from the field.  She also added five rebounds and two blocked shots.  Kimmes led five players that scored in double figures.  Abby Oakland connected on three 3-point shots and had 13 points, while Leidall and Andrea Fennern each finished with 11.  Freshman Abby Kenealy scored a career-high 10 off the bench and led both teams with nine rebounds.

For the game, SMSU shot 49.4 percent from the field, hitting 41-of-83 shots, and out-rebounded the Comets 52-33.  The last time Southwest had 50 rebounds in a game also came against Mayville State back in 2006.  Southwest also forced 33 turnovers, the most since forcing a school record 41 against North Central (Minn.) last winter.  SMSU also blocked nine shots in the game, two off the school record of 11.

The Mustangs never trailed in the game and ended the first half on a 15-0 run as Taylor Voss stole an inbounds pass and made a layup as the first half buzzer sounded.  Kimmes scored 14 of her 18 in the first half in just eight minutes on the court.

SMSU stretched its 31-point halftime lead out to 51 after an 11-2 run with 7:01 left in the game and never looked back.  SMSU reached its 62-point victory by closing the game on an 11-2 run once again.  The 62-point win was the third-largest margin of victory in school history.

Southwest continues non-conference action on Saturday, Nov. 22 at home against Mount Mercy (Iowa) at 3 p.m.
