ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State took advantage of a poor Southwest Minnesota State shooting performance to hand the Mustangs a 66-57 conference loss Friday night in Aberdeen, S.D.
NSU improves to 5-3 ( 2-1 NSIC) on the season, while SMSU drops to 6-4 (0-2 NSIC).
Sara Leidall scored a game-high 15 points and snagged a team-high seven rebounds. Laura Kramer also clipped the double-digit mark in points as the sophomore chipped in 12 to go along with six boards.
SMSU shot 19 of 61 for 31.1 percent from the field in the loss
Neither team looked to have control of the game early as the conference foes exchanged leads, but the host Wolves drilled a pair of back-to-back three-pointers just before the break to take a 33-27 lead into the locker room.
Both teams were spectacular from the line in the first half; SMSU was a perfect three of three from behind the stripe, while NSU was two for two.
The Wolves busted out of the gates at full speed in the second half, putting together a 13-point lead five minutes into the half..
SMSU, however, did manage to battle back and managed to get within four with just under two minutes remaining off a pair of Kramer free throws. But that is as close as the Mustangs would get as NSU scored the final five points of the contest to complete the win.
NSU outrebounded SMSU 43-31.
The Wolves were led by Jodi Reinschmidt's 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs finish out the weekend conference road set tomorrow when they travel to Bismarck, N.D., to meet Mary for a 6 p.m. match-up.
