OMAHA, NEB.: Angie Rohne's infield single in the bottom of the sixth scored Meaghan Laetsch for the eventual game-winning to help lead Southwest Minnesota State to a wild 10-8 victory over Northwest Missouri State in the first game of the Nebraska-Omaha Classic in Omaha, Neb.
SMSU held a 7-2 lead after three innings of play only to see the Bearcats rally to tie the score at 8-8 with two runs in the top half of the sixth inning on a two-run home run.
In the decisive bottom of the sixth inning Laetsch lead off reaching on an error and advanced to third base one out later on a double by Amanda Burkhart. Rohne then delivered the game-winning hit scoring Laetsch to give SMSU a 9-8 lead. Katie Turner than added insurance with an RBI single to push the SMSU lead to 10-8.
The rally made a winner out of Mustang starter Amanda Johnson who tossed the complete game scattering 10 hits while allowing six earned runs. She struck out six batters while walking one to improve to 7-2 on the season.
Erin Dickhausen and Turner paced the SMSU offense with three hits apiece while Amanda Opatz and Amanda Tucci each added two hits.
SMSU is now 11-6 on the season and will now play the University of South Dakota at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
