Mustangs Flash Some Muscle in Rout of Mary

WAYNE, NEB.:
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team hit two home runs as it defeated Mary 8-1 on Sunday in the final game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Crossover in Wayne, Neb.  The win caps a perfect 5-0 weekend for the Mustangs, their second consecutive 5-0 weekend.  It also brings Southwest to a perfect 5-0 start in the NSIC this season and 20-6 overall this spring.

SMSU has now won 10 in a row and 13 of its last 14 games.  The 10-game winning streak is the longest for the Mustangs since a 14-game winning streak last year tied for the second-longest winning streak in school history.  The school record for consecutive wins is 17, set in 1993.

Amanda Burkhart and Amanda Opatz hit back-to-back home runs to highlight the game for SMSU in the fourth inning.  Burkhart's brought in three runs as the Mustangs scored four of their eight runs in the fourth inning.

Opatz finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Burkhart was 1-for-2 with three runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Erin Dickhausen scored her 137th career run, breaking the school record.  Melissa Smith (1995-98) previously held the record with 136.

Amanda Johnson pitched all seven innings and struck out five for the win.

Southwest travels to St. Cloud State on Wednesday, Apr. 9 for a doubleheader with the Huskies beginning at 2 p.m.
