Baseball Season Ends with Loss to No. 15 Wayne State

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.:
Wayne State right-hander Nick Schumacher, the 2008 NSIC Pitcher of the Year, struck out a career-high 14 batters while moving to 13-1 on the season leading the Wildcats to a 9-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in Wayne, Neb.

The loss ends the season for SMSU with an overall record of 24-20.  WSC, ranked No. 2 in the region and No. 15 in the nation, improves to 40-10 overall.

Wayne State jumped on the Mustangs early in the game scoring three runs off of SMSU starter Jared Pick in the top of the first inning.  WSC added a single run in the second then scored three more off of Pick in the third inning to put the game away.

It was plenty of support for Schumacher who earned his third victory over SMSU this season.  Schumacher scattered seven hits allowing one earned run and didn't walk an SMSU batter.

SMSU scored its lone run in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Derick Swenson scoring Matt Merten who singled earlier in the inning.

Greg Laughlin and Lex Reinke each had two hits to pace the Mustang offense.

Three SMSU seniors, Reinke, Brandon Wilhelmi and Arron Olson played their final game in Mustang uniforms.  Reinke finished his career with 189 hits ranking sixth in school history.
