MARSHALL, Minn. - No. 15 Southwest Minnesota State moved to 4-0 on the season earning an 82-47 non-conference victory over Dakota State on Wednesday night in Marshall. It's the second straight season SMSU has started 4-0, tying a school record, but no Mustang team has ever started a season 5-0.
Wednesday's game was an exhibition game for DSU, which is 4-3 on the season.
SMSU never trailed in the game building a 19-8 lead in the game's first 10 minutes and taking a 41-14 halftime lead. The Mustang defense limited Dakota State to just 23.3 percent shooting in the opening half (7 of 30) and forced 11 first half turnovers.

Trent Carlson, who finished the game with a career-high 18 points, connected on four first half three-pointers to lead the Mustangs in the opening half.
SMSU had four players score in double figures with Carlson leading the team with 18 points. Senior
Nick Dale scored 17 points and added a season-high nine rebounds. Junior
Dalston Jones added 13 points and four assists, while junior
Scott Roehl, playing in his first game of the season, chipped in with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. No Mustang starter played more than 22 minutes in the contest. SMSU also played without senior guard
DeAnthony Zanders, who missed the game with sickness.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field (30 of 73), including 8 of 23 from three-point range. SMSU held a 49-43 rebound advantage and forced DSU into 24 turnovers, leading to 34 SMSU points.
Derek Kreutzfeldt led Dakota State with 18 points on 5 of 10 shooting.
SMSU will have 10 days off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 5, opening conference play at Minnesota State, Mankato.
