FT. MYERS, Fla. - Matt Bauer's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Southwest Minnesota State to a 10-9 victory over Minnesota Duluth in game one of a doubleheader, then followed that up with a two-run home run in game two to lead the Mustangs to a 10-3 victory in game two to complete the sweep in Ft. Myers, Fla.
SMSU is now a perfect 8-0 on the season for the the first time in school history.
In game one, SMSU jumped to an early 4-1 lead after three innings, but UMD rallied with seven runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead. The Mustangs had an answer in their half of the fourth scoring four unanswered runs to tie the game at 8-8.
SMSU regained the lead in the fifth inning as Bauer doubled with two outs and came around to score on a
Scott Rambow RBI single. UMD tied the score in the sixth inning with a single run and the game remained tied until the seventh inning.
In the home half of the seventh,
Derick Swenson lead off with a single and moved to second on a hit by pitch by
Greg Laughlin.
Andrew Kinney singled to load the bases and was followed by the game-winning single by Bauer to score Swenson from third base. It was the second straight walk-off victory for SMSU over UMD this season.
Curtis Smith pitched six innings in game two to earn the victory and was helped offensively by
Andrew Kinney who drilled a home run, while
Greg Laughlin finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and
Jake Munsch chipped in with a pair of RBI singles.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Rambow and
Jake Munsch. The lead was extended in the third inning on a home run by Kinney and another RBI single by Munsch. SMSU put the game away with three runs in the fourth as Laughlin smacked an RBI single and later in the inning Bauer smashed a two-run home run.
SMSU continues play on Thursday at 2 p.m. EDT with a twinbill versus Bethel (Minn.) in Ft. Myers, Fla.
