MARSHALL, Minn. –
Southwest Minnesota State junior left-hander Jared Pick tossed his first career shutout and junior Matt Bauer belted two home runs to lead SMSU to a 10-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader sweep over Minnesota, Crookston on Friday afternoon in Marshall.

SMSU won the opener 6-3 behind a complete game, eight-strikeout effort from junior Brad Haag.

In game two, Pick tossed a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks finishing the game tossing 88 pitches, including 61 for strikes.  He reached three balls in the count on just four of the 24 UMC batters he faced in the game.

Pick picked up all the run support he needed in the first inning as smashed a two-out, two-run homer to give SMSU a 2-0 lead.  The Mustangs added to the lead in the second inning as Scott Rambow lead off with a double and with one out moved to third on a wild pitch.  After walks to Josh Nolan and Jake Munsch loaded the bases, Derick Swenson coaxed a walk to score the first run of the inning.  Greg Laughlin then singled to right field to score Nolan and push the lead to 4-0.

Rambow added to the lead in the third inning with a run-scoring single left center to score Derek West to make it 5-0 in favor of SMSU before Munsch singled to left field to score Doug Stearns and push the lead to 6-0.

The Mustangs put the game out of reach in the fourth as Laughlin singled to start the inning and moved to second on an Andrew Kinney single.  Bauer then stepped up and belted his second home run of the game and his team-leading seventh of the season to make the score 9-0 SMSU.

SMSU pounded out 14 hits in game two with Bauer finishing 3 for 4 with five RBI and three runs scored.  Laughlin also added three hits and scored two runs, while Rambow and Swenson each finished with two hits apiece.

In the opener, Swenson's RBI single in the fourth inning snapped a 2-2 score and SMSU never looked back in taking game one.  Two batters following Swenson's hit, Kinney smacked a two-run single to right center to score Nolan and Swenson to make the score 5-2.

SMSU pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning as Munsch delivered a two-out run-scoring single to score Nolan who doubled a batter earlier.

Kinney started the scoring for SMSU in the first inning drilling a two-out solo home run to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.  UMC gained the lead with two runs in the second inning, before SMSU tied the score in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by Swenson.

Haag struggled early but settled down as the game went on and finished with his first career complete game at SMSU scattering nine hits and allowing three runs.  He finished with eight strikeouts and walked one batter.

SMSU finished with 10 hits in the opener with Kinney, West, Munsch and Bauer all collecting two hits apiece.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Alumni Field.
