Defense Leads Mustangs to Victory Over Minnesota Duluth

MARSHALL, Minn. – Taylor Huseby scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for his first career double-double to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 63-47 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Friday night in Marshall.

 

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for SMSU, which improves to 10-8 overall, 5-7 NSIC, while UMD falls to 7-12 overall, 4-8 NSIC.  It was SMSU's fifth straight victory over UMD, its longest in the series that started in 1972-73.  SMSU allowed a season-low 47 points for the third time this season.

 

Huseby finished shooting 10 of 13 from the field and had zero turnovers in 24 minutes.  Scott Roehl added 10 points and eight rebounds to round out SMSU's double figure scorers. 

 

Andrew Peschong added a team-high four assists and now has recorded 302 in his career, just two behind the record of 304 held by Marques Pena.

 

SMSU used solid defensive all night long limited UMD to 32.2 percent shooting from the field (19 of 59), including 2 of 15 from 3-point range.  SMSU also finished with a 45-36 rebound advantage, including 15 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second-chance points.

 

The Mustangs trailed 18-17 with 11 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first half, before holding the Bulldogs to just four points over the next 11 minutes of the game as SMSU built a 39-22 lead with 17 minutes left in the game.

 

UMD pulled to within 39-29 with 14:42 left in the game, but SMSU answered with a 10-2 run to seal the victory and hand the Bulldogs their third straight defeat.

 

The two teams played to an even game in the first 14 minutes with SMSU holding a slim 21-20 lead, before the Mustangs' Taylor Huseby reeled off six consecutive points to extend the lead to 27-20 with three minutes left in the half.  Following a UMD field goal, SMSU answered with a 3-pointer by Jordan Miller and a basket by Scott Roehl to give the Mustangs a 32-22 halftime lead.

 

The SMSU defense was strong in the opening half limiting UMD to just 29 percent shooting (9 of 31) and to just four points in the final 11 minutes.  SMSU was also outstanding on the boards, holding a 27-18 advantage, including 11 offensive rebounds.

 

Huseby paced the Mustangs with 14 points and five rebounds in the opening half.

 

SMSU ended the game shooting 37.7 percent (23 of 61), including 4 of 13 from 3-point range.  The Mustangs finished with 15 assists and committed just six turnovers.

 

Ron White led Minnesota Duluth with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

 

SMSU continues its homestand tomorrow night hosting Bemidji State University for “Hawaiian Night” 2010.  Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. at the R/A Facility.
