SDSU Holds Off SMSU Rally in Brookings

BOX SCORE

BROOKINGS, S.D. –
NCAA Division I South Dakota State, behind 18 points from Nate Wolters, earned a 94-80 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday night in Brookings, S.D. SDSU, which defeated the University of Iowa, last Sunday, is now 3-0 on the season, while SMSU falls to 1-1 overall.

SMSU was led by Scott Roehl, who recorded his first double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. Roehl was 9 of 11 from the field and a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Jordan Miller, who was held scoreless in the first half, came up big in the second half with 19 points on 6 of 10 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Trent Carlson added 12 points with four first half 3-pointers.

The Mustangs committed 22 turnovers in the game, while SDSU had just 10 turnovers.

SDSU started the game strong scoring the first seven points before SMSU's Lavione West ended the drought with a jumper with 17:41 left in the half. The two teams played even for the next seven minutes as SMSU trimmed the lead to 22-19 with 10 minutes remaining in the half on a Trent Carlson 3-point field goal.

The Jackrabbits answered with an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to extend the lead to 33-22 with 7:30 on the clock. SMSU wouldn't go away and rallied back over the next three minutes and cut the deficit to 36-31 with 4:49 remaining following back-to-back field goals by Scott Roehl, but SDSU closed the half on a 13-4 run to build a 49-35 halftime lead.

SMSU started the second half strong trimming the SDSU lead to 57-52 with 13:37 left in the second half on a Taylor Huseby basket. But again the Jacks had an answer of their own, scoring the next nine points to push the lead to 66-52 at the 11:43 mark.

SDSU held a 76-61 lead with just under eight minutes left in the half before SMSU made another run, pulling to within 77-70 with 5:30 left in the game after a 9-1 run, but that was as close as the Mustangs would come as the Jacks scored the next four points and never looked back in earning its third straight victory.

SMSU finished the game shooting 46.3 percent from the field, including 7 of 18 from 3-point range. SMSU held a 38-34 rebound margin, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds.

Southwest Minnesota State will open its home season on Saturday afternoon taking on Minnesota-Morris in a non-conference game with tip-off slated for 3 p.m. at the R/A Facility.
