SMSU Charts Fourth Straight Win, Defeats Minnesota, Crookston

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State extended its winning streak to four games, matching its longest of the season, by defeating Minnesota, Crookston 75-50 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference basketball Saturday night in Marshall.

 

SMSU, ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Central Region rankings, had five players score in double figures for the second time this season.  Kevin Andrews and Taylor Huseby each scored 13 points on a combined 11 of 15 shooting.  Scott Roehl grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and also added 11 points for his third double-double of the season.

 

SMSU (13-8 overall, 8-7 NSIC) never trailed in the game and built a 48-23 halftime lead by shooting 52.9 percent in the opening half and limiting UMC to just 31.6 percent.

 

UMC (3-18, 0-15 NSIC) cut the deficit to 58-42 with 11 minutes remaining in the game, but SMSU stopped any comeback thoughts by the Golden Eagles by responding with an 8-0 run in the next three minutes to hand UMC its 17th straight loss.

 

Trent Carlson (12) and Jordan Miller (10) rounded out SMSU's double figure scoring, as Carlson connected on four 3-pointers, while Miller added two 3-pointers.

 

SMSU finished the evening shooting 50 percent from the field (30 of 60) and 44.4 percent (8 of 18) from 3-point range.  The Mustangs held a 37-33 rebound advantage and committed just six turnovers, matching a season-low.  The SMSU defense forced 11 UMC turnovers and held a 16-5 advantage on points off turnovers.

UMC finished the game shooting 31.3 percent (15 of 48) from the field and was led in scoring by Adam Hendricks with 17 points.

 

Southwest Minnesota State, currently in seventh place in the NSIC standings, will now embark on a key road trip next weekend in St. Cloud and St. Paul.  The Mustang will face second place St. Cloud State on Friday, Feb. 12 and then face fifth place Concordia on Saturday, Feb. 13.
