Concordia, St. Paul Sweeps SMSU in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -
Concordia, St. Paul used strong pitching in both games to earn a non-conference sweep over Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday in Auburndale, Fla., winning 5-2 and 5-1.

SMSU, playing its first games since Feb. 5, falls to 2-3 overall, while CU improves to 6-6.

In game one, the Golden Bears took advantage of four SMSU errors to score four unearned runs off of Mustang starter Adam Schrader.  

Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, SMSU scored its first run of the game on an RBI single by Adam Thygesen scoring Brian Ness.  CU answered with a three-run fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead, before SMSU trimmied the deficit to 5-2 on an RBI single by Matt Bauer.

Schrader fell to 0-2 on the season pitching 4.1 innings allowing three hits and one earned run with six walks and two strikeouts.

In game two, the Golden Bears scored two runs in the first inning and then added three runs in the second inning off of SMSU starter Jared Pick to take an early 5-0 lead.

The Mustangs lone run came across in the sixth inning as Bauer scored on a wild pitch.  Tyler Fayden collected two of SMSU's four hits in the game.

Pick fell to 1-1 on the season allowing five runs, four earned, giving up eight hits and two walks in five innings.

SMSU will continue play on Monday afternoon with a 3 p.m. EST doubleheader versus Ashland (Ohio).
