MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State shot 56.3 percent from the field and connected on a season-high nine 3-point field goals to earn a 78-62 victory over Bemidji State on Saturday night in Marshall.
Jordan Miller scored 17 points to pace SMSU (8-9, 5-8 NSIC) with five 3-pointers, while
Trent Carlson added a season-high 13 points, connecting on three 3-pointers.
Scott Roehl chipped in with 15 points, while
Lavione West rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting.
Mason Walter led BSU (7-10, 4-9 NSIC) with 17 points and two 3-pointers. The Beavers finished the game shooting a season-low 31.6 percent (18 of 57) from the field, including 5 of 20 from 3-point range. BSU entered the game averaging 48.7 percent per game from the field.
BSU led for much of the first half, taking its largest lead 33-26, with two minutes left in the half. SMSU rallied to cut the deficit to 35-33 at halftime following a field goal by
Jimmy Abraham with three seconds left and a steal on the ensuing in-bounds pass and field goal at the buzzer by
Matt Zager.
SMSU finished the opening half with 12 turnovers, but shot 54 percent (13 of 24) with three 3-point field goals.
The Mustangs played much better in the second half committing just three turnovers, shooting 58 percent from the field and making six 3-pointers.
SMSU continues home action next weekend with a pair of games at the R/A Facility. The Mustangs will host Upper Iowa on Friday, Jan. 28 and Winona State for “Hawaiian Night” on Saturday, Jan. 29.
