Mustangs Snap Streak with Victory over Minnesota, Crookston

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Scott Roehl recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 76-62 victory over Minnesota, Crookston on Tuesday night in Marshall.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for SMSU, with the four losses coming by a combined six points. SMSU is now 6-5 overall, 3-4 NSIC. UMC falls to 5-5 overall, 1-5 NSIC.

Jordan Miller was the only other Mustang to score in double figures with 11 points, while dishing out a career-high seven assists. All 11 players who played for SMSU scored in the game. Jimmy Abraham and William Giddings both had solid games for the Mustangs, each finishing with a career-high eight points.

SMSU shot 53.4 percent (31 of 58) from the field and was a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line. SMSU did not attempt a free throw in the second half.

Adam Hendricks paced the Golden Eagles with 18 points on 8 of 10 shooting in just 18 points. Eric Dearden added 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting.

SMSU built a 41-37 halftime lead, despite nine offensive rebounds by UMC, which led to 11 second chance points.

SMSU took its first lead of the game with 17:04 remaining on a layup by Taylor Huseby. The Mustang maintained the lead for the remainder of the half, including building a 26-15 lead at the 7:32 mark following a layup by Jimmy Abraham. A layup by William Giddings gave SMSU a 33-23 lead with 4:54 left in the half, but the Golden Eagles rallied with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 33-30 at the 3:26 mark.

UMC finished the first half 13 of 13 from the free throw line, while SMSU was a perfect 9 of 9.

UMC cut the lead to two points on three occasions in the second half, including 52-50 with 14:52 remaining in the game, but the Mustangs held off the rally with a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to push the lead to 65-52 with 9:29 on the clock. Matt Zager scored on a layup and was followed by a 3-pointer by Trent Carlson at the 12:53 mark to give SMSU a 57-50 lead during the decisive run.

SMSU will continue its two-game homestand tomorrow night taking on MSU Moorhead (6-4, 3-3 NSIC) at 8 p.m.
