MARSHALL, Minn. – MSU Moorhead connected on 13 3-point field goals and shot 52.7 percent from the field, to earn an 84-64 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Tuesday night in Marshall.
Charlie Chapman paced the Dragons (7-4, 4-3 NSIC) with a game-high 23 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including 7 of 8 from 3-point range. MSUM, which never trailed in the game, snapped a four-game losing streak to SMSU (6-6, 3-5 NSIC) in Marshall, earning its first win since the 2005-06 season.
The 20-point loss for SMSU was its first since losing 83-62 to Northern State on Dec. 7, 2007.
Scott Roehl led SMSU with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
MSUM started the game strong jumping to a 12-2 lead with 16:19 left in the opening half. The Dragons continued their hot shooting extending the lead to 25-9 at the 10:53 mark following a 3-pointer by DJ Hamilton.
SMSU answered with a quick 7-0 run capped by a
Jordan Miller 3-pointer to trim the lead to 25-16 with 9:24 remaining in the half, but again MSUM had an answer and responded with a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the half at 36-16 with 5:27 on the clock.
MSUM held a 39-20 lead with 3:41 left, but Miller scored eight straight points for the Mustangs to cut the deficit to 39-28 at the 2:04 mark. Hamilton capped the Dragons' red-hot first half with a 3-pointer with five seconds left to give MSUM a 46-32 halftime lead.
MSUM shot 60.7 percent (17 of 28) in the opening half, including 8 of 11 from 3-point range. SMSU finished the opening half shooting 39.4 percent (13 of 33) with two 3-pointers on eight attempts.
Chapman led the Dragons with 12 first half points on 4 of 4 shooting from 3-point range.
SMSU cut the deficit to 12 points on two occasions early in the second half, but that was as close as they would come, as the Mustangs suffered their first home loss of the season.
Miller was the only other SMSU player to finish in double figuring scoring with 13 points.
SMSU finished the game shooting 41.5 percent (27 of 65) from the field, but was just a season-low 25 percent (4 of 16) from 3-point range.
SMSU will now begin a three-game road trip this Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. match-up at league-leading and 12th ranked Minnesota State, Mankato.
