MARSHALL, Minn. – Scott Roehl recorded his 13th double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 71-58 victory over St. Cloud State on Saturday night in Marshall.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for SMSU (11-12, 8-11 NSIC) versus St. Cloud State, picking up its first win since Feb. 13, 2009.
SMSU used strong defense all night long, limited SCSU (12-11, 11-8 NSIC) to just 35 percent (20 of 57) shooting from the field, including 6 of 23 from 3-point range. SCSU's Taylor Witt, the conference's leading scorer, was held to just five points on 1 of 10 shooting and committed four turnovers.
Taylor Huseby was the only other Mustang to score in double figures, finishing with a season-high 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting.
Shaun Jensen led the Huskies with a career-high 17 points.
SMSU, which never trailed in the game, built a 37-27 halftime lead, only to see SCSU trim the lead to 40-36 with 17:17 remaining in the second half.
The Mustangs then used a key 11-2 run over the next five minutes to extend the lead to 51-38 with 12 minutes remaining following a pair of
Matt Zager free throws and SMSU never looked back, holding a double digit lead the remainder of the game.
SMSU will now head north for a key two-game road trip next weekend, starting next Friday, Feb. 18, versus Bemidji State.
