BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State scored the game's first seven points , connected on a season-high 14 3-pointers and never looked back in earning an 84-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday in Bemidji, Minn.
BSU (9-14, 6-13 NSIC), which snapped an eight-game losing streak to SMSU, connected on 14 3-pointers on 19 attempts and ended the game shooting 59.6 percent (28 of 47) from the field.
SMSU (11-13, 8-12 NSIC) had its two-game winning streak snapped and remains tied with Northern State for eighth place in the NSIC standings and one-half game ahead of Wayne State and Minnesota Duluth. SMSU will play at UMD tomorrow night.
The highlight of the night for SMSU came with 2:33 left in the game as senior
Scott Roehl scored on right-handed hook shot to become the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Roehl led SMSU in the contest with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Vinard Birch added 12 points, while
Jordan Miller rounded out SMSU's double figure scoring with 11 points.
Lance Rogstad led all scorers with 25 points on 8 of 12 shooting, including four 3-pointers. James Ellisor added 18 points and nine rebounds.
BSU held a 27-20 rebound advantage in the game, including limiting SMSU to just five offensive rebounds. It's just the fourth time this season SMSU has been outrebounded in a game.
BSU, which held a 37-18 halftime lead, pushed the lead to 60-37 with 11:18 left in the game, before SMSU countered with a 13-0 run in the next three minutes to cut the lead to 60-50 with 8:21 remaining. BSU's Lance Rongstad ended SMSU's chances for a comeback by hitting three straight 3-pointers to push the lead to 69-52 with 5:30 remaining.
BSU stormed out to a big first half lead, building a 19-4 lead in the game's first 10 minutes, as SMSU made just two of its first 13 field goal attempts.
SMSU trimmed the margin to 23-12 with five and a half minutes left in the half, but BSU continued to connect from long-range, and moved the lead to 37-18 at halftime.
The Beavers connected on 6 of 8 3-point field goals and shot 54 percent (13 of 24) from the field in the first half and also dominated on the glass, holding an 18-9 rebound margin in the first 20 minutes.
SMSU ended the game shooting 48 percent (24 of 50) from the field, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range.
SMSU will close out its regular season road schedule tomorrow night taking on Minnesota Duluth (9-14, 7-12 NSIC) starting at 6 p.m.
